Work Health and Safety for Statutory Supervisors Course
About the course
This course is designed for supervisors and team leaders working in the Western Australian mining industry. It provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to implement and monitor work health and safety (WHS) systems, contribute to workplace risk management, and meet the WHS requirements for statutory supervisors under the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations (WA) 2022.
Duration: 4 days (3 days of training plus an assessment support day)
Delivery: Face-to-face training, followed by workplace-based assessment activities.
Units covered:
- BSBWHS411 – Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs
- BSBWHS414 – Contribute to WHS risk management
Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites, but participants must have access to a mining workplace where they can complete the workplace assessment activities.
Language, literacy and digital skills: Participants should have a reasonable level of reading, writing and computer skills to successfully complete the course.
Assessment: Following the training, participants complete workplace-based assessment activities, including reviewing WHS documentation, conducting workplace inspections and risk assessments, and consulting with others about WHS matters.
Certification: Participants who successfully complete all assessment requirements will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units completed.
During the course, you will review and discuss:
- the WHS legislative and organisational framework
- WHS duties and responsibilities
- communication, consultation and training
- workplace inspections and investigations
- hazard identification and risk assessment
- risk control and evaluation
- WHS record keeping.

This course is scheduled to be delivered at your workplace or at a venue arranged by your organisation.

Preparing for your course
What to bring
Please bring a pen and highlighter, as well as a laptop computer for use on the final day of the course.
Before you attend
To help you get the most from the course, we encourage you to familiarise yourself with the following before attending the course:
- Your organisation’s WHS policy
- One of your organisation’s health and safety procedures
- Your organisation’s hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control forms
- Your organisation’s incident / injury report form
Other important information
Assessment support day
The final day of this course is an assessment support day. During this session, you will have the opportunity to work on your workplace assessment activities with guidance from your TSA facilitator.
Please bring a laptop computer with internet access and ensure you can access your organisation’s WHS policies and procedures.
WorkSafe legislation exam
This course covers the nationally recognised units of competency required for statutory supervisors under Schedule 26 of the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations (WA) 2022. It does not prepare participants for the WorkSafe legislation examination, which is a separate requirement.
